The cemetery in Clyde is named for native son James B. (Birdseye) McPherson (1828-1864), who was a Union Army general during the Civil War. McPherson died during the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 while serving with General Sherman. McPherson was a career army officer, having graduated first in the 1853 West Point class. He is buried on a hill to the left (north) of the main entrance. The impressive 1881 memorial features a bronze statue of McPherson pointing forward on a high pedestal that is surrounded by low piles of cannon balls and five cannons aimed outward. A tall flagpole flying the stars and stripes 24/7 completes the memorial.
